Newborn Foal with Pix

First Glimpse

First Glimpse

One of the extra horses we had for sale we acquired from a family who had themselves only had her a little while but could no longer afford to keep her.  When they got her, there was some question about whether or not she was in foal.  We sold her to a lucky young lady, and eventually we realized she was surely going to get two horses for the price of one!  Yesterday, when I walked by the kitchen window for a 2nd cup of coffee, I spied an extra set of legs out in the pasture.

Kathy and I headed out to get a closer look. Not only were all the other horses protective, but Missy, the mare, wanted us nowhere near her and her baby.  After a moment or two however, she realized she had a dilemma:  the foal was not exactly steady on her legs yet.  Not wanting to be caught, but wanting us near the baby without her even less, she quickly changed her mind and let us check out the situation.

We brought the mare and the foal up to the yard, where we looked them over carefully before putting them in the barn and calling the owners.

The foal turned out to be a little fawn-colored filly whom the owners have named ‘Chica’ (after considering and discarding ‘Buttercup’). Now a day and a half old, Chica has discovered the joy of running circles around her mother, who trots around vainly trying to keep the baby from getting too far away.
